On October 19th
2016 and October 23rd 2016 in the small town of Brighton had a
fundraiser was held by the East Northumberland Secondary School
Interact Club for the End Polio Now campaign. Through the two days of
donations the Interact Club raised $300.40 for the campaign. This
total will then be
tripled through the Bill and Melinda Gates
foundation and then again by the government of Canada.
Polio is a disease that
paralyses the body and mostly effects children under the age of five.
Polio does have a vaccine, yet it is not always the easiest way to
send around the world as people need to be trained to give the
vaccine, and the vaccines need to be paid for. After the child
receives their vaccine they will then receive a purple pinky so they
do not become vaccinated again. As some may have heard part of End
Polio Now slogan, “Purple pinkies for Polio.”

Though Polio is nearly
eradicated in the world there are a few outbreaks still continuing in
other countries. In countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan and
Afghanistan. Supported by Rotary, the club is creating awareness and
is hoping to have the fatal illness eradicated worldwide.
