The Heir by Kiera Cass

20 years ago, King Maxon and Queen America were married.  Living more then a happily ever after through a process called the Selection.   Letting them find each other through fate, and never letting them be separated.  Now it's time for their eldest daughter, Eadlyn, to be the very first Queen of Illéa (instead of being married off to form alliances).  She is having 35 suitors brought into the palace to find a husband.
Throughout the book we witness the point of view of Eadlyn.  Growing up she was taught that she was the most powerful person in the world.  Causing her to be strong, brave, and (being taught to be queen) was not the very best at showing her emotions.  Finding love seems very unreasonable to her because she is so independent, love is a weakness in her eyes.   To her, a fairytale romance only happened for her parents, and that it could never ever happen for her.
If you have read the first 3 books in the Selection series, you'll notice that Eadlyn gets her stubbornness from her mother, Queen America.  That she is very, very reserved; having a difficult time showing her emotions towards people who aren't family.  Even with family sometimes it is still a little hard.  That showing feelings towards others will make her look weak in the eyes of her people.  Which, in her opinion, would cause a disaster for her kingdom when she rules.
Throughout the book we begin to learn that people really aren't too found of Eadlyn because she doesn't show enough emotion and feel that the royal family doesn't about their people.
As the story progresses we witness have feelings for some of some of the boys, and how each of them always seem to have part of her heart.  Her only problem is showing her affection.   Only she knows about her feelings, and the bubbly feeling she receives around certain people.  Although she wanted nothing to do with her Selection.

This book was one of the best books in the Selection series.  This novel brought up 2 very popular topics in our society today: women rights and empowerment, and assault.
The entire book is about the very first queen of Illéa being a princess and finding her husband who will become a prince consort of Illéa.  Eadlyn is to be the first female ruler ever.  Which is a massive accomplishment for the current king and queen for allowing such an event to happen; and a brave act for Eadlyn to go after.  Now that women are allowed more, and more in several countries then 100's of years ago.  Women rights, and empowerment is involved with more of our political events worldwide.  The tradition in Illéa is that the daughters were married off to other kings and princes to form alliances with other kingdoms.  The more girls, more alliances.  Causing less enemies or rebels from other kingdoms.  This idea is good in a political view, because there would be less wars.  However these girls never get a chance to rule and never get the chance to marry for love, but for power for their own country that they aren't apart of after they are married.  When George Illéa wasn't thinking about the future, only himself and his power.  He mostly focused on his wants and needs.  Leading his own son to leave and rebel.   His only concern was himself and not even his daughter was enough to cause him to change his mind about marrying off the women in the palace.
Assault, Women abuse, Sexual assault etc. these are very important terms/topics that Kiera Cass brought up.  Perhaps not sexual assault, but the idea of these topics was touched upon throughout her novel.  There were only a few scenes were Eadlyn was assaulted.
This book is amazing and is going to be a hot summer read.  The novel is full of twists and turns, new experiences, and new topics in this Selection.

BEFORE YOUR DONE READING QUICK ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT ASSAULT AND ABUSE!!
For starters it is very important that you speak up when you have been assaulted or abused, or even if you witness it. Please speak out because if you say something, it gives someone else the power to speak up.  Being rough with anyone is cruel.  Gripping someone's arm, doing something against anyone's will is plain wrong and is very cruel.   If anyone's actions frighten or scare you, please tell an adult, or go to the cops.  Do something before the situation gets worst.  Speak up, please.  Everyone deserves better then to be abused or assaulted in any way.
